Chicago blues legend Koko Taylor dies at 80

The Chicago blues queen, Koko Taylor, has passed at the age of 80.  She was recovering from surgery at Northwestern Hospital when she passed today.

According to the Chicago Tribune, she was born Cora Walton in 1928 in Memphis, Tenn., she was orphaned by the time she was 11, and had to work the cotton fields to support herself. She came to Chicago in 1952 with her future husband, Robert “Pops” Taylor, to escape the plantation life and “look for work, start a new life, get married and have a family.”

She had no intention of becoming a singer. But she was inspired by the blues songs of Memphis Minnie and Big Mama Thornton at an early age, and had sung gospel in church. When she came to Chicago, she was thrilled by the music she encountered in the South Side clubs, amplified and raucous, a harder incarnation of the backporch brand of blues she had heard in the South.

Susan Boyle Finishes Second On ‘Britain’s Got Talent’

Susan Boyle who became a YouTube sensation almost overnight and has been under scrutiny like never before finished second on ‘Britan’s Got Talent’ reality television show.  Susan became an international video star after blowing the judges away with her outstanding voice during the initial tryouts for the show.  That performance went on to become one of the most watched YouTube videos in recent history.  You can see that video HERE.

Once you see her, you realize what all the fuss is about.  Susan doesn’t fit the “normal” look of a singing star.  So over the past few weeks she has undergone a few makeovers, but she has kept most of her natural charm.  She has even been stalked by the local paparazzi.  Through it all Susan kept singing and kept wowing the audience.

In the end she finished second in the competition, but she is the real winner in this because she desired to show her talent and now the world knows that Susan Boyle is one outstanding singer.  I’m going to go out on a short limb and say that you have not heard the last of Susan Boyle.  You can read the full story of her finishing second HERE.

Congratulations Susan.  Your trip to stardom is just beginning.

WNUA-FM is no longer Smooth Jazz

I heard some disturbing news this morning.  WNUA-FM, 95.5 on my FM dial is changing to a Spanish music format.  How could this be!  I have had WNUA programmed into my radio for over 20 years.  I used to want to work for WNUA.  I did work with one of it’s DJ’s, Denise Jordan Walker.  We worked together on a magazine called Chicago Jazz Weekly.  I was one of the writers for the magazine.  Those were good times.

I’ve always liked the smooth jazz format and I will miss it.  I wonder if someone else will step up and fill that space, but I’m sure that Clear Channel would have kept the format if it was making money for them.  I guess I’ll have to get my fill of jazz from the New Smooth Jazz AOL radio station which is actually not a bad substitute, but what do I listen to in the car?  I’m sure I’ll figure out something.

If you have comments about the format change please let me know by posting a comment.

One of the more interesting stories of the day is the announcement by Donald Trump that Miss California, Carrie Prejean, can keep her crown.  I know there are a lot of people on both sides of this one, but I believe that the Donald made a wise decision today.  Now lets pray that Carries uses the platform that she has been given to not only advance her career, but to glorify God in the process.

The WSJ simply had to release an app for the iPhone if it was going to remain relevant. Unfortunately for the Journal, Apple hasn’t yet figured out a safe or easy way to charge iPhone users for the things they do within apps. So anything from the Journal that you can read on an iPhone (or an iPod Touch) is not charged.
